Meganissi, despite being a very popular island with tourism being the main source of income for the local community, continues to have agricultural and livestock production and has excellent local products to showcase, which the Meganissi women use in their traditional recipes.

Fresh fish, olive oil, meat and wine are the most popular local products, which you can enjoy in most restaurants in Meganisi, in traditional dishes as well as in their more modern versions.

Don’t miss eating fish in Meganisi!

Akrivoula (Voula) Politis, President of the Cultural Center of Tafion and President of the Municipal Council of the Municipality of Meganisi, has a great love for the traditional recipes of her island and is happy to share them with us!

Egg pie

Materials:
• 10 eggs
• 750 ml of milk
• 500gr feta or chlorotyri
• 150gr self-rising flour or semolina
• Oil or melted butter, for the pan and 2-3 tsp. of soup for inside the mixture.
• If the cheese is not salty, you may need a little salt.

Implementation:
In a bowl, beat the eggs with the milk, then rub the cheese with your hand and add it to the bowl. Then we also add the rest of the ingredients. After the mixture is mixed, pour it into a small pan. Bake at 180 degrees on the resistances, on the first rack, for about half an hour, until our pie is golden brown.

Lemon cod with potatoes

Materials:
• 1 sheet of salted cod (about 1.5kg)
• 6-7 potatoes (chopped quince)
• 1 large onion
• 12-15 small onions for stew or 4-5 medium ones (cut into 4)
• 2 cloves of garlic
• 200 – 250 ml olive oil
• pepper
• 2 lemons

Implementation:
We have salted and cleaned the cod. In our pot, first layer the potatoes, then put the fish in large pieces, evenly. Finely chop the large onion and garlic and add the small ones. Add the oil, pepper and water until it is visible in our pot. We do not add salt because the fish is salty by itself. Boil until the potatoes are boiled, about half an hour and as soon as it is turned off, add the juice of two lemons.

Oil pie

Ingredients (for a 38 cm pan):
• 1200ml olive oil
• 1500gr of all-purpose flour
• 25g of sesame seeds

For the syrup:
• 1200ml of water
• 1200g of sugar
• 2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon
• 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
• 3 tablespoons of honey

For the finish:
• 100gr sugar
• 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
• 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

Implementation:
Put all the ingredients for the syrup in a pot, put it on the fire and after it boils, leave it for five minutes. Take care that it does not swell and remove the foam that is created.

Then put the oil in a large pot and let it burn well (that is, after it starts to smoke, let it burn for about five minutes). With quick movements, add the flour to the hot oil and mix well with a wooden spoon so that the flour does not burn. Lower the heat a little and work the mixture for about five minutes, stirring constantly. Then we start adding the syrup, being careful because it splashes and we continue mixing.

At the end of the syrup, take the pot off the heat and continue stirring until all the syrup is absorbed.

Sprinkle half of the sesame seeds on the pan and spread our dessert evenly using a parchment paper to spread it properly. Sprinkle with the other half of the sesame seeds and cover well with the parchment paper. We cut our dessert into rhombuses, if we want we can add peeled almonds, in the center of each piece from an almond.

Bake for 50-60 minutes in a preheated oven at 200 degrees on the resistances or 160 degrees in the air.

In a bowl, prepare the mixture with the sugar, cinnamon and cloves. As soon as we take the oil pie out of the oven, sprinkle it with the sugar mixture. Let the dessert cool and then remove it to a plate.

We can not bake the oil pie and simply make with a tablespoon, spoons of halva and sprinkle with sugar, cinnamon and cloves.
